You would like to get a permanent residency visa for Australia based on your qualifications and/or work experience, but you actually do not have required qualifications to prove your knowledge. The solution for you is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that involves assessment of your current skills and knowledge in order to get a formal recognition. The assessment is done by education and training providers. Your other qualifications may be also taken into account.
RPL is mostly used by people who have gained knowledge through work experience and do not want to waste time learning things they already know how to do. They usually need to enrol in a course to apply for RPL or credit transfer. Note that education and training providers often charge fees for these services.
Also, RPL is used for migration purposes.

Anyone can apply for RPL.
I want my skills to be recognised, but I don’t have relevant qualifications to prove my skills that I gained from working in the industry. What should I do?
The RPL process takes into account all your relevant skills, knowledge and experience that you currently have. Through the RPL process, you may be able to gain a full recognition or parts of it if there are gaps in your knowledge. If needed, you can complete the rest of the recognition through training.
What if I have gaps and I need to attend trainings?
If you have gaps in your skills and you need to attend classes or trainings, you will have to pay all the fees for those units in order to get the qualification.
What documents are needed in the assessment process?
Once you provide evidences such as a resume (CV), job description and referrals from employers and/or supervisors which prove your competence, you may be asked to:
- Answer questions about your work experience in an interview;
- Demonstrate your skills and knowledge by completing practical tasks or showing your assessor how you would complete it.
What is the cost of an RPL?
The cost depends on the qualification you want to apply for. Usually the prices start from around $1,000.
I have only overseas work experience and I am located offshore. Can I apply for RPL?
Yes, you can still apply. There may be additional costs involved, which has to be checked first.
